Natchitoches named one of best places to ‘Retire & Row’ Picture

The City of Natchitoches has been named as one of the Top 10 Best Places to Retire & Row in the United States.

The article will be published in January 2010 on http://www.RowingandSculling.com. The article will examine towns across America, which have been ranked according to a set of 15 criteria related to economics, quality of life and rowing factors.

The idea to rank these towns came from an inquiry from a masters rower, whom upon approaching retirement, was looking for a "small, pedestrian-friendly town, warm weather and walk-able access to a rowing venue." When he could not find this information, he contacted "Rower's Almanac", which began ranking communities on such factors as housing costs, state income tax rates, number of restaurants, theatres, libraries and hospitals, types of water and rowing available, number of boathouses and regattas and the size of the local rowing population.

The City of Natchitoches, the oldest permanent settlement in the Louisiana Purchase, is home to the Northwestern State University Crew team. Rowers from across the country travel to Natchitoches each year to row on the scenic, calm waters of the 36-mile Cane River Lake and other bodies of water found in the Natchitoches region.

Natchitoches has received numerous national accolades, touting the community as a top retirement destination, including being named by "U.S. News & World Report" as one of the Top Ten Bargain Spots to Retire.
