LT. Governor Landrieu Names Eight Recipients of Encore Louisiana Grant Awards
Posted April 26th, 2010
New Orleans, La. – Lieutenant Governor Mitch Landrieu announced that eight organizations will receive $5,000 in grant funding from the Encore Louisiana Commission, which promotes the attraction and retention of Louisiana residents ages 50 and above. The Encore Award recipients are:
• The National WWII Museum
• The Historic New Orleans Collection
• People Program
• Big River Economic & Agricultural Development Alliance
• Southeast Louisiana Chapter of the American Red Cross
• St. Bernard Project
• City of Bossier City
• Lambeth House retirement community
The Encore Awards, in conjunction with the Top 50 for 50+ recognition program the Commission implemented in Fall 2009, were created to raise awareness of the importance of the 50+ consumer segment and the need to prepare communities for the aging of the population. As a result of longer life expectancies and the aging of the Baby Boomers, over 30% of Louisiana’s citizens are 50+ and that number will rise to 35.7% by 2029. However, there are more 50+ residents moving out of the State than moving in – a trend worth reversing since the 50+ segment controls most of the nation’s spending as well as 80% of its net wealth.
“Now more than ever, attracting and retaining residents in this segment is an economic development imperative” said Landrieu, “and the recipients of the Encore Award are leading the way as they enhance quality of life and make our communities more appealing to residents who are 50 and above.”
In addition to funding, recipients will receive promotional support in Encore Louisiana Magazine, and the Encore Louisiana Commission website, http://www.encorelouisiana.com.
