Elderhostel Announces New Name
Posted September 22nd, 2009

This September, Elderhostel announced its new program name to Exploritas, Adventures in Lifelong Learning. As the world’s largest educational travel organization for adults 55 and older, Elderhostel underwent a name change after 34 years of operation. James Moses, Elderhostel President, recognized that “while there are millions of us who are "in the know" about Elderhostel, there are untold millions more for whom the name itself is a barrier they cannot get past — either because they don't perceive themselves as "elders" or because the word "hostel" represents an inaccurate description of our accommodations.” At http://www.exploritas.org, Moses explains the meeting of the new name. It combines the word Explore with the Latin word veritas, meaning truth. This combination defines Exploritas to explore your mind and discover the world through authentic and thought-provoking adventures in learning. Elderhostel is a not-for-profit and currently offers several programs in Louisiana, in alliance with the University of Louisiana at Lafayette and the Center for New Orleans Studies. Elderhostel brings approximately 1,000 participants to the state annually, but the number was 3,000 or more in years prior to 2005.
